Many people come to our orthopaedics shop in Xirivella with the same question: “my feet ache by the end of the day, but do I really need custom insoles, or will off-the-shelf ones do?” It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your case. Here we explain the signs worth watching for, so you can make an informed decision without overspending or falling short.
Signs your stride needs attention
Some discomfort your body flags fairly clearly. Pay attention if you recognise yourself in any of these:
- Pain that appears or worsens when walking or standing for long hours, especially in the heels, sole, knees, hips or lower back.
- Plantar fasciitis or a heel spur: that sharp stab in the heel on your first steps in the morning.
- Uneven wear on your shoes: if one shoe wears down far more on the inside, outside or heel than its pair, your stride is out of balance.
- Flat or high-arched feet already diagnosed, or the feeling that your feet “collapse” or “don’t land right”.
- Fatigue or overload when playing sport or standing at work, with aches you didn’t have before.
A single sign doesn’t always mean you need insoles, but if several coincide, it’s worth an assessment. There’s no need to wait until the pain is limiting either: the sooner an unbalanced stride is corrected, the easier it is to stop it dragging on the knees, hips and back over time.
Pharmacy insoles versus custom insoles
Standard insoles from a pharmacy or sports shop can offer temporary relief and are useful for cushioning or very mild discomfort. The catch is that they’re designed for an “average” foot that doesn’t exist: they can’t correct your particular stride because they weren’t made by looking at your foot.
A custom insole starts from a real study: we analyse how you land, scan the shape of your foot and design the insole to spread pressure where you need it. That’s why it’s the right option when there’s persistent pain, an altered stride or a clinical condition (diabetic foot, arthritis, the after-effects of an injury).
What to expect from an assessment
A good assessment shouldn’t start by selling you anything. In our case, we listen first: when it hurts, what footwear you use, what you do for a living. Then we run a gait analysis and, if appropriate, a foot scan. Only then do we tell you frankly whether custom insoles make sense for you, or whether, honestly, a change of footwear or simpler insoles would be enough.
In short
If you have recurring pain, an unbalanced stride or a diagnosis that justifies it, custom insoles usually make a real difference, not just generic relief. If you’re only after a little extra cushioning now and then, you may not need them yet.
